Sneem Walking Club (SWC) hosted a Climb With Charlie Event on Saturday 2nd April 2022 to support former TV presenter and journalist Charlie Bird in his challenge to Climb Croagh Patrick in aid of Irish Motor Neurone Disease and Pieta House.
Walking Clubs around the country were encouraged to hold their own “climb” to raise awareness and funds. Our chosen challenge was Knocknagantee in the Gloragh area of Sneem and thanks to the permission of the landowner (Mick Murphy) we were able to run a successful climb on the chosen day, with a good turnout of participants. Thanks also goes to Teddy McCarthy who provided transport to and from the start/finish on the day and all the volunteers who helped on the day. We raised over €1800 for the charities.
We were delighted to have 50 walkers on the day to climb the 676 metre Knocknagantee in the Dunkerron Mountains Sneem. Participants were from Sneem and further afield and included 3 young intrepid Sneem scouts (aged between 9 and 10) who managed the climb without a bother, along with some of our more senior participants. Everybody who completed the climb reported back how much they had enjoyed it and felt a great sense of achievement.
This event could not have happened without the hard and consistent work put in by the members of the Sneem Climb With Charlie Committee, volunteers on the day to take care of registration, the Sneem Mens Shed for controlling traffic, Sneem GAA for letting us use their ground and facilities, local shops and hotels for supplying refreshments and Teddy McCarthy for ferrying walkers to the start and back when they finished.
